View Full Version : Your Name's Origin

I am really not too sure if a thread like this exists already (if it does, oops!), but what are the origins for your characters names?
For me...
I was suggested to name a roleplay character long ago Anaste Jovis and I got confused with the last and first name deal, so I started using Jovis as the name of my healing class in every game I played. I did some researching and found some pretty nifty things of the name:
Jovis, the Old and medieval Latin variant derived from Sanskrit Djovis, meaning "sky god or bright god of heaven (perhaps reference to the sun-god),
and
JOVE, JOVES, JOVIS. Jove, otherwise known as Jupiter, was the chief god of the Roman pantheon. The name Jo-ve became a poetic alternative after Jupiter gained precedence during the Roman classical period.
Edited to add alts:
Atarishia: is the name of the priest from a spin off anime from Record of Lodoss War called Legend of Crystania. She was apparently quite powerful but doesn't really ever cast anything in the series, so I thought what a perfect name for a paladin...
Trenia: is a name from another video game called Makai Kingdom. The original character is a carefree and seemingly clueless girl who ends up doing funny stuff. I always wanted to roleplay a clueless druid, so hehe..
Lorelol: since no one ever gets this, go to lorelol.ytmnd.com I will probably remake her into a Draeni for hilarity purposes :)
Lutie: is named after the Christmas town in another game called Ragnarok Online. I figured since she was going to be a frost mage, that a snowy-town name would be fitting.
I can't remember the rest of my alt names... lol

My names origin comes from another subject I like -- Star Trek. My name means "Dark Omen" in Klingon
Sylinrul
09-27-2006, 08:56 AM
Sylinrul comes from the drow word for Hunter... I had a hunter with the name back when I played DAoC. Since my original & favorite name of Knaz didn't sound very human I decided to use this one when I started playing WoW came out. *cough* since Faelwen was totally in love with Night Elves, I was stuck playing Alliance*cough* :(
I named all of my alts after English soccer clubs. So I had
Blackburn - Troll rogue
Stoke - Undead mage
Manchester - Dwarf warrior
and then for fun rolled a female char with the name of a shitty soccer club called Bury.
We know how that went, sadly.
Melenia

I wanted my character name to be *Melania* that was taken so I chose *Melenia* ...
Most ppl call me Melly .. even ppl at work. hehe
  Melly
I had the name Masterion for a long time in web-games like planetarion/prophet's song and some others I played with my friends at college a couple yrs back.
Then I found out WoW would come out, and stumbled upon GoA (guardians of azeroth, some members which raided with BP early BRL/MC) through IRC. And that's how I ended up at US servers, AD.
But the name didnt sound very Fantasy like so I changed it to Terion (my old and now deleted lvl 60 dwarf hunter, I got hooked on hunters in open beta but then got tired of it later), and I had my mage Teri as an alt back then (mage was my original planned main).
My RP-name Was Teri Snowflower, cause I was like planning to be full frost mage and all, I was for a long time, I never respecced till I joined BP :ninja: .
Anyhow, long story there :D
Sinnyil

Sinnyil was a name that the EQ random name generator gave to me.
I've kept it for 7 years now. I like it,

I actually got my name from playing Wing Commander IV back on my old 200 Mhz machine oh so many years ago. I don't recall if it was the default name, or a randomly generated one, or one I just simply came up with, but I've used it ever since.

Brieta
09-29-2006, 04:35 AM
Brieta Carmine was a name I used on the message boards of a band's website that i used to be a member of. It was more of an online "community" of people, much similar to how BP is, as we all know each other and some of you have known each other for years. I've been posting on that forum for about 6 years now, except that my new user name is Lux, which you'll notice is the name of my little bank alt, Luxe... I had to add an e because Lux was taken.
anyway, thats the whole story behind me : )
Renjin
10-05-2006, 02:17 PM
Let's see my characters org name was Renblades. Which was based off one of my favorite characters from The Pool of Radiance book set in Forgotten Realms. It got changed by the GMs to Ialir (shutters some christmas morning gift I might add). After sending in e-mails and thanks to the guild helping me with a new name Renjin. Rentai was another name people wanted me to get. Now if it had been avaiable I would have used Vanion as my character name. First D&D character's name which I still use to this day on some games.
Lilliana
10-05-2006, 03:05 PM
The origin of Lilliana's name is actually derived from a Latin variant of the flower named 'Lily', which was often used as a symbol of innocence. Considering Lilli's background, that she herself doesn't know her own true nature, I thought it rather appropriate that she be named for what she knows about herself, and not what she truthfully is.
Tobrin
10-19-2006, 04:31 PM
hehe, i remember that, tiger. Its not a real name, it was your handle=p <3 the dart.
Anyhow, a few people over time guessed where my name is from. its from the Dragon star Trilogy, i took the name of the namesake of my favorite character<Tobin>. Every character i have has a name from that series, minus Zeid, who is my low level orc warrior i never finished. I made him cause of my FFXI addiction... =p
Gegoran
10-19-2006, 04:48 PM
I was signing up to join a SWG player association and had to write a background for my character.
People say im talkative, so i started with gregarious, then hated being shortened to "Greg" so i went to
Gegoran! which is naturally "Geg" for short.
Maerlyn
10-19-2006, 05:26 PM
"Maerlyn" is taken from Stephen King's Dark Tower series... considering the character, appropos for a Warlock. It was my first choice for the Undead 'lock I planned on re-creating from beta, but alas, friends done dragged me Alliance-side. My first choice over here was actually the same name I used in FFXI for my RDM, Siege, but some name-camping motherfucker had already claimed it.
Siege's last name, incidentally, was "Perilous"... named after the seat at the head of the Round Table in which the one destined to find the Holy Grail would be seated (and before we changed the name of our linkshell to "Star Onion Brigade" we were the "Knights of the Round"). So yeah... there's a real Arthurian legend theme going through all my naming choices, it would appear.
Estan
10-19-2006, 06:08 PM
Estan was a fighter/blade (bard variant) in the last D&D campaign we (Sinnyil, Ithaqua, Jovus, others) played before 3.0 came out. He was chaotic neutral, and a real asshole.
Estan wasn't his real name, but a stage name--the full version being "Estan Anarch". He thought that was a neat anagram, representative of his carefree, toss-of-the-dice, damn-the-man approach to...well...everything. Including, apparently, spelling.
Trivia for geeks: I've only rolled exceptional strength once, for Estan. Both d10s came up zeroes.
Ithaqua

For Estan:
Llama!
As far as my name goes, the first character in this game I named was my mage, Macgruder, in the open beta stress test. I have been using that name for casters since NWN 1, when I was looking for a name that I didn't think was too retarded, happened to be reading my daily does of Boondocks (haven't kept up with this recently), and jacked the author's last name.
For my hunter, I wanted something Lovecraftian, but nothing too obvious like C'thulhu, Azathoth, etc. After searching through the CoC d20 Manual for a while, I found the great old one Ithaqua, the wendigo. While the name would've been most appropriate for a frost mage, the hunter's blue skin sold me.

And here I was thinking you were just paying homage to some significant rectal trauma of years gone by.
Get it? Tear-ass? Eh? Eh?

Drakana

Oh yea..
Drakana is a variation of the name of a friend in high school, no real back story to it.
Dierdra was created after a failed friendship with someone. Since I was upset over it, I thought it was apropriate to use a name that means "heartbroken." Variation of Dierdre which has this to go with it: She was a tragic character in Irish legend who died of a broken heart after Conchobhar, the king of Ulster, forced her to be his bride and killed her lover Naoise.
